A Guide to Oils for Calming and Reducing Stress, Tension, and Anxiety

Using Essential Oils to Calm Tension and Anxiety

As an aromatherapist for 24 years, I have seen how essential oils can be a natural and effective solution for calming tension, anxiety, restlessness, improving memory, and more. In light of the growing need these days for natural and safe ways to deal with different emotional situations, I’ve put together this guide to essential oils for relaxation - to help you discover which oils are recommended, with an emphasis on safe and effective use. Use as needed:

Calming Oils

For feelings of restlessness, irritability, or mental stress.

Calmol – a blend of oils for calming and improving concentration, creating a pleasant atmosphere in the office, at home, or in any space you choose.

Instructions for use: Add 6 drops to a burner or diffuser, or 2 drops on a tissue to inhale. I recommend combining it with the oils below - they are all wonderful.

You can mix a total of 6 drops in your preferred combination and add them to the burner or diffuser cup with water. You can also use each one separately, but blends usually work better.

Lavender – known for its calming properties and ability to promote restful sleep.

Bergamot – helps reduce stress and brings a sense of calm. 

Oils for Anxiety

When anxiety is expressed as discomfort, reluctance to perform daily tasks, or general worry.

Instructions for use: 6 drops in a burner or diffuser, or 2 drops on a tissue to inhale. I recommend combining with the oils below - they are all excellent.

You can mix up to 6 drops in total and add to the burner or diffuser cup with water. You can also use each oil separately, though blends often work better.

Lavender – provides a sense of calm and helps reduce stress.

Bergamot – contributes to feelings of tranquility. 

Oils for Stress

Stress is often felt as tension in the shoulders, stiff muscles, or neck pain.

Directions for use: 6 drops in a burner or diffuser, or 2 drops on a tissue to inhale.

Lavender – known to improve mood and help release tension.

Oils for Restlessness

Including rapid heartbeat, a feeling of a lump in the throat, digestive problems, or difficulty concentrating and falling asleep.

Sleepy – promotes restful sleep.

Instructions for use: 6 drops in a burner or diffuser, or 2 drops on a tissue to inhale. I recommend combining it with the oils below - they are all wonderful.

You can mix a total of 6 drops in the desired composition and add them to the burner or diffuser cup with water. You can also use each one separately. Blends usually work better.

Oils to Improve Mood

Mood Up – an oil blend that helps uplift the mood and improve feelings of happiness.

You can mix a total of 6 drops in your chosen composition and add to the burner or diffuser cup with water. You can also use each one separately, though blends often have a stronger effect.

Essential Oils for Managing Post-Traumatic Symptoms

Essential oils can also be used as an additional tool for managing symptoms such as anxiety, stress, and insomnia.

Lavender – helps reduce anxiety and improve sleep.

Instructions for use: 6 drops in a burner or diffuser, or 2 drops on a tissue to inhale.
